The Day You Bet On Yourself
“Is there anything else I can help you with? No? Great! Well, take care and have a good evening!” you say as you wrap up your last call for the work day.
You can’t wait to curl up on the sofa with a plate of slow cooked beef shin ragu maniche and a glass of the strawberry dragonfruit juice you got from Marks and Spencers last night.
“So, why are we still here?” she interrupts.
You sigh. You’d recognise that voice anywhere. You don’t wanna do this. Not again. You’re drained and totally cooked from the 8 hours you’ve been sat at your desk.
“But,” you reply, “we did get to have that half hour lunch break.”
You put the paperwork back in the folder and begin shutting down your computer.
“You didn’t answer my question. Are you sure we have to do this again tomorrow?” your inner self interjects again.
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“You know why!” you scream back at your inner self, frustrated. More at yourself than at her.
“But it doesn’t make sense. You’re greater than this. We’re greater than this. Yes, one more day. One more week. One more month. One more year. I understand the plan. But please, trust me when I say this: you need to trust yourself more. I believe in you. Do you believe in you?” your inner self asks, whisper-shouting from within, the breath deflating from her lungs as her hope starts to flitter.
“Yes, yes I will. I mean I do.” You stutter as you swipe your keycard and exit the office, fishing for your car keys.
“Then let’s start it tonight!”
And it hits you. You’ve been promising yourself that you’ll start living your dream, you’ll start that project, you’ll hit that goal one day.
But you’re literally running out of time. Every week. No, scratch that. Every day. But every day that passes where you haven’t kept that promise to yourself that you’d work on your ambition, even just for an hour in the evening, is a moment of opportunity that you let slip through your fingers and you silently curse yourself yet again because you just didn’t have the time to work on your vision. You know the one. The one that only you can see. The one that comes from within.
And you know you’re capable. Your inner self knows you’re capable. And the person writing this blog post knows you’re capable too.
Truly.
So, you may be asking yourself ‘why have I not started?’
Deep down you know the reason. You can hear yourself saying them as you read this.
Perhaps it’s because you’ve unwittingly found yourself faced with an overgenerous serving of sautéed fear? Along with a brisket of slow cooked self doubt drizzled with perfectionism, and garnished with a lack of focus? And let’s not forget the tall glass of overwhelm spritzer delightfully blended with too much research because you don’t believe you’re expert enough yet.
This isn’t self-sabotage food. This is M and S self-sabotage food. And you’re biting off more than you can chew.
Please don’t feel guilty or self pity, because you’re not the only one. There are many people in a similar position who feel this way too.
But there comes a day where you simply have to bet on yourself.
Take a moment. Breathe. It’s okay. Just know that you’re doing better than you think you are. Do you wanna know why?
Because you’ve got the ambition. You’ve got the drive. You’ve got the vision. And most importantly, you’ve got your inner self rooting for you to succeed.
And we’re here to help you too.
So bet on yourself tonight. No matter how minuscule, take the action. Do the thing. Take your next small step towards starting your true pursuit. And do it like your soul depends on it, because your inner self needs room to breathe, to breathe life into your dreams.
So, what next small step will you be starting tonight?
